Get Involved with Undergraduate Education: Updates from the 2023 Open House

On Tuesday, August 29, with the beginning of fall semester just days away, Undergraduate Education (UE) held their annual open house as part of University Conference week. Invited faculty, staff, and administrators gathered at the Maeser Building for the event.

Each year, the UE open house allows members of the BYU community to learn how they can become more involved with UE and its programs. This year, attendees spoke with program leaders to learn about a variety of initiatives.

General Education, in coordination with First-Year Experience, shared details about a new required general education class — UNIV 101: BYU Foundations for Student Success. Program leaders shared their vision of how students can benefit from it. Beginning winter semester 2024, all incoming BYU freshmen will be required to complete this course.

The Honors Program demonstrated how faculty can get involved with the program, including teaching opportunities, student mentoring and Alcuin Fellowships.

The office of National Scholarships and Prestigious Fellowships explained the valuable resources it provides students and how faculty can point students to these resources. Each year advisors from this office help students apply for major scholarships such as the Truman and Fulbright programs.

Study Abroad for General Education (SAGE) informed faculty about the opportunities they have to teach abroad. Faculty members learned how to apply to be a SAGE director for the 2025 and 2026 academic years.

First-Year Experience spread the word about their 30-year anniversary, celebrated in October 2023. They provided details about multiple events they will host in commemoration of this milestone.

Leaders of UE greeted and spoke with guests during the open house, who were given a UE-branded hat and enjoyed gelato at the close of their visit. To learn more and become involved with UE and its programs, contact UE at undergraduate.education@byu.edu.
